ABOUT
About
MISSION
We are a pay-what-you-can theatre collective dedicated to delivering socially relevant, financially accessible, professional theatre to Indianapolis.
VALUES
INCLUSION
Representation is a fundamental part of our philosophy. We open our arms to any and all to participate in the Monument experience; be it in our audience; onstage; or those we collaborate with offstage.
SUBSTANCE
Theatre is more than mere entertainment. Storytelling has been central to the human experience since the beginning and belongs in the heart of society. Our goal is to create new audiences and theatre that matters.
HONESTY
The world in which we live must be confronted with authenticity. We must break from narratives reinforcing the status quo and provide our audience with an experience empowering the least among us and challenging the most comfortable.
BACKGROUND
First conceived in 2016, Monument has emerged as a breeding ground of substantial, thought-provoking theatre in Indianapolis. Emphasizing simple staging and narrative potency, we produce stories that matter for those who need to see them. Following our first full season in 2018 we were recognized as the Best New Theatre (BroadwayWorld) for our innovative, guerilla-theatre style approach to storytelling.
Financial accessibility has always been an important pillar of this operation and many of our founding and supporting teams have grown up knowing poverty, making this personal and extremely important to our mission. During the pandemic we made a point to look inward and reflect about how we service our audiences and how to improve We decided that the only truly accessible and ethical way forward was to commit to a structure that allows all to participate in the Monument experience. We are proud to call ourselves a pay-what-you-can organization and welcome all to join us at our shows no matter how much (or little) you can afford.
As Monument has grown and developed over the years we have embraced our unorthodox and resourceful means of production while undergoing transformations in leadership structure and identity along the way. We present to you a reinvigorated, growing collective identity rooted in the effort to produce damn good, accessible theatre.
